Swine Flu

Information for staff, parents and pupils.

The school will follow the guidelines set out by the Health Protection Agency at http://www.hpa.org.uk.

The UK has moved to a treatment phase to manage the current flu outbreak. As a result GPs will diagnose cases on the basis of clinical observation rather than laboratory testing. If you have questions relating to diagnosis or treatment the telephone contact for Kent, Surrey and Sussex, South East Thames Region is  0845 425 1757

Symptoms

These are similar to those of normal seasonal flu and can include:

  • Fever (temperature of above 38 degrees Celsius).
  • Fatigue.
  • Lack of appetite.
  • Coughing and sore throat.
  • Diarrhoea and vomiting (though this is rare).

Treatment

This is available from your Doctor and for Boarders from our Health Centre.  The virus (H1N1) is sensitive to and can be treated with antiviral drugs of which there is a plentiful supply in the country.

Precautions:

  • Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing.
  • You not need to isolate yourself from other people if you are feeling well.
  • Use a tissue when possible and dispose of dirty tissues promptly and carefully.
  • Wash hands frequently in hot soapy water to reduce the spread of the virus from your hands to face or to other people.
  • Clean hard surfaces in your residences regularly (e.g. door handles) using a normal cleaning product.

If you are diagnosed with Swine Influenza, or someone you have been in close contact with has been diagnosed with this strain of flu, please advise the School Office immediately on 01435 874600.
