Mayfield clinches national riding title for second year running
Mayfield girls rode their way to victory in the National Schools Equestrian Association Championships on the weekend of 28th and 29th November, the second year in a row and the sixth time in the history of the competition that the Mayfield team has clinched this national indoor title.
Once again beating off stiff competition from schools with more established sporting reputations, Mayfield’s senior team of Emily Erde, Harriet Colderick, Josie Duggan and CC Rowson beat twenty-one teams from across the country to the title.
Alongside the outstanding team performance were several excellent individual results. Issy Graham Watson took 2nd overall in the Senior Individual Championship, Emily Erde 3rd and Josie Duggan 5th.
The school also showed that it has strength in depth, with Mayfield’s junior team taking second overall in the Novice Championship and its intermediate team taking third overall in the Intermediate Championship.
Jill Barker, Director of Riding, has spent 20 years building Mayfield into a school with exceptional equestrian credentials. Jill commented: “I am extremely proud of the girls. As reigning champions they were under a great deal of pressure to perform well. They kept their nerve and rode stylishly to the title for the second year running.”
“The important thing is that these girls aren’t at Mayfield simply to ride. They commit wholeheartedly to their academic studies – as GCSE and A Level results show – and organise their time carefully so they can also put in the training.”

The Mayfield 'purple' team (George Wagenman, Pru

Sixth formers Josie Duggan and Emily Erde also enjoyed a successful weekend of eventing. Congratulations to Emily for completing her first BE Intermediate event this weekend, and to Josie Duggan who came 3rd in the BE Novice at South of England Horse Trials. Superb results for Mayfield at JAS Regional Qualifier - Mayfield, 19th September

to take 2nd place, a great achievement matched by the intermediates,
Mayfield pink, comprising Helen Mcall, Ellie Duggan, Cosi Tibbles and Josie
Mitchell who also came 2nd.
Mayfield
Red, the senior team, performed extremely well over a large track of fences to
win the competition and take 1st place. The team, made up of Izzy

Mayfield riders continue to show their class - Hickstead, 5th August
We underlined our position as one of the finest riding
teams in the country last week when we
took third place at the National Schools Jumping Championship at Hickstead on Wednesday 5 August. The event also saw an
outstanding individual performance by Ella Curley, who was also second individually just ten days after helping Great
Britain to secure the team gold medal at the 2009
Children’s European Championships held in Belgium (pictured above). The
National Schools Jumping Championship is one of the highlights of the school equestrian calendar. This year’s
competition saw 67 teams from across the country compete for the coveted title.
Mayfield’s Senior Team, comprising Ella Curley, Emily Erde and Charlotte McKee, put in an excellent performance
to claim third place. Reigning National Schools Champions, Mayfield was the highest placed school from the whole of
the South-East of England
for the second year in a row.
Thirteen
year-old Ella Curley, who has been a pupil at St Leonards-Mayfield School since
2007, was second individually in the competition. Ella’s star is
clearly rising fast, for just ten days earlier (24 – 26 July 2009) she competed
for Great Britain at the
Children’s European Championships in Moorsele (Belgium), where her outstanding
performance helped the team scoop the gold medal. Ella came fourth individually
at the event, only just missing out on individual bronze.
