Outstanding A Level Results Confirm
Strength Across the Board
Mayfield’s Sixth Formers are celebrating
another exceptionally good set of A Level results, with well over half (53%) of
all results at grade A and a school record (84%) at A - B. Six girls achieved
four A grades and 11 girls achieved at least three A grades in their exams. The
results secure this year’s leavers places at a wide range of universities,
including the University of Oxford, Yale
University, University College London,
Manchester University,
Kings College London, the University
of Hong Kong, and Bristol University.
In eleven subject areas – Art & Design,
Ceramics, Geography, History, Religious Studies, German, Spanish, Chinese,
Classical Civilisation, Latin and Music – every pupil entered for the
examination achieved either an A grade or B grade.
Breadth and balance are evident again this
year both in the range of A Level subjects studied by the girls and the
university places they have secured. Sophie
Morley’s four A grades are all the more remarkable for the spread of
sciences, social sciences and arts in which they were achieved. Her results –
in Maths, Chemistry, Geography and Ceramics – will see her take up a place at Bristol University to study Chemistry. Sophie's leadership, as the 1st team netball captain, will be sorely missed.
Rebecca
Gandy will shortly be flying to the United
States to take up her place at the prestigious Yale University.
Rebecca’s academic achievements in Economics (A), Music (A), History (A) and Latin (A) were
complemented by her achievements outside the classroom, which included Grade 8
in the organ and leading the school’s principal choir, Schola Cantorum.
Helen Springbett, Mayfield’s Deputy Head Girl and a leading
member of the Debating Team, secured her four A grades in English, Physics,
Maths and Chemistry. Other local girls who secured straight A grades are Fiona Hartland and Rebecca Reid. Fiona took on the responsibility of being Mayfield’s
Head Girl whilst studying for her A Levels in Spanish, English Literature and
Geography. Rebecca excelled in Drama & Theatre Studies, English Literature
and History and, following a gap year, will study English Literature at
university.
Flora
Zhou
will take up her place to study Chemistry at the University of Oxford,
having scored straight As in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths. Katie Armstrong secured straight As in
Biology, Chemistry and Maths and will begin her Medicine course at the University of Birmingham in September. Harriet Wood is departing for the
highly-regarded Religion, Philosophy & Ethics degree at King’s College
London having achieved A grades in English Literature and Religious Studies and
a B in Spanish. Martha Cheng will
return to Hong Kong with three As and a B in Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Art
to take up her place on the Architecture course at the University of Hong Kong.
Sophie Lawes (A, A, B) will be
embarking on an English and Philosophy degree at the University of Nottingham
while Frances Ng achieved
well-deserved straight As in Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths and
will be studying Aeronautics & Astronautics at Southampton University.
This is just a small sample of the results.
All of our Year 13s must be congratulated on capping their Mayfield careers
with an impressive set of A Level results. The staff at school are tremendously
proud of all that they have achieved and will sorely miss them as they move on
to university places and gap years.
Headmistress, Miss Antonia Beary commented: “These are another excellent set of results and we are all proud of what
these Mayfield girls have achieved, in their A Levels and during their
time at school. Not only have they achieved superb academic grades, but
they have also contributed to the school and wider community. I have no doubt
that they will continue to make a positive difference in all that they do in the
future and we look forward to following their continuing progress.”
