Mayfield pupils celebrate National Poetry Day

This year we celebrated National Poetry Day with a recital of poems by staff and girls in their native language during morning assembly on Monday 12th October. We heard all sorts of poetry, from love poems to children’s rhymes in over fifteen languages, from Welsh to Chinese, Greek to Polish, from Latin to Irish Gaelic, and in African languages as well as Hebrew. The occasion highlighted the common emotion evoked by poetry in all languages, and the unity of the human spirit wherever we are from and whatever language we may speak.

The girls were also keen to demonstrate their eagerness to see poetry in everything, even the seemingly technological and mathematical… As well as an emphasis on poetry in English classes, Year 7 produced posters depicting the poetry of IT, and even wrote their own poems about maths! These were performed to rapturous applause in the Lower School Library on Thursday afternoon.

Eager to demonstrate that there is poetry in everything, girls made posters about the poetry in computing, and even wrote poems about maths!
