Mayfield Question Time
Saturday 27th February 2010
As we wait with baited breath for the precise date of the next election to be revealed, soon to be first time voters at Mayfield Sixth Form (and their friends and families) had the opportunity to quiz Wealden’s own candidates last weekend. We were delighted to welcome our local MP, Charles Hendry (Cons) and also Wealden’s prospective parliamentary candidates: Lorna Blackmore (Lab), Chris Bowers (Lib Dem), Dan Docker (UKIP) and David Jonas (Green).
In the chair was Camilla Fitzpatrick of Year 13, who skilfully marshalled the members of the panel through a series of questions which ranged from tuition fees to faith in our political system, and the war in Afghanistan to the problems of housing and overdevelopment in the Weald. In particular, the Afghan conflict, European Union membership and the charitable status of independent schools divided opinion on the panel. Camilla has been offered a place to read Politics and Economics at the LSE next year, and her calmness under pressure from both audience and politicians bodes well for a future at the students' union.
We were very pleased to welcome not only members of the Mayfield community but also representatives from the Pestalozzi International Village for whom this was their first taste of UK politics. We hope that they will be joining us for the Model International Parliament on June 28th.
Next stop is our very own mock election, which we will be bringing to you through the Mayfield website.
