World Book Day 2010 celebrated in distinctive style!
Girls from Lower School right up to the Sixth Form were delighted to meet Sophia Bennett, Old Girl and author of teenage novel 'Threads', when she returned to Mayfield on Thursday 4th March to help us celebrate World Book Day.
Sophia's first novel, 'Threads' won the Times/Chicken House award for unpublished authors in
2008 and has enjoyed widespread acclaim since its publication in last September. It incorporates themes of the British fashion world
alongside issues arising from Ugandan war.
The girls were riveted by Sophia’s account of how she writes and also her love of fashion history and glamour. She gave talks and followed these up with creative writing workshops for smaller groups of budding writers.
Sophia also presided over the official opening of the newly refurbished Lower School Library, which now boasts vibrant coloured seating areas and thousands
of pounds worth of new stock on the shelves.
In time-honoured
tradition, girls from Lower School dressed up for the day as characters
from books and thoroughly enjoyed their day in their elaborate costumes – neatly
combining the twin elements of dressing-up and literature that feature
in the novel ‘Threads'!
