A healthy body is a healthy mind.
Sport plays a pivotal role in the life of our School. Our experienced and dynamic department offers a wide range of activities within timetabled lessons and organises an extensive extra-curricular sporting programme, which together encourage every girl to participate fully in sport and develop a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
For Years 7 to 9 the curriculum includes netball, hockey, swimming, gymnastics, dance, rounders, athletics and tennis. In Years 10 and 11 these activities can be developed and the girls also have the opportunity to learn new sports such as volleyball, badminton, water polo, tag rugby and aerobics. In the Sixth Form the girls are encouraged to try new activities; they can also compete in netball and hockey fixtures.
In addition to curricular and extra-curricular PE, the department offers Physical Education as an option at both GCSE and A level. The courses offer an extensive range of activities, allowing girls to pursue their areas of expertise. The theoretical components covered in both courses are key to the PE programme and provide girls with the tools they need to assess and improve their own personal performances.
The School has superb facilities including an astroturf, 6 netball courts/8 tennis courts, a modern dance studio, indoor heated 25m swimming pool, fully equipped fitness room and a well-equipped gymnasium. The school also boasts impressive riding facilities, with a purpose built equestrian centre situated on the school site.
We run an extensive extra-curricular sport programme with fixtures occurring during the week and on Saturdays. In the Autumn and Spring Terms the extra-curricular timetable focuses on netball, hockey, dance, gym and swimming. In the Summer Term the extra-curricular focus is on athletics, tennis and rounders.
All teams compete regularly against other schools, including the major independent schools in the South East of England. The School enters local, county, regional and national competitions and has a fine record of sporting achievement and excellence. Mayfield is fortunate to count among its pupils a number of extremely talented girls competing at county and national standard in a variety of sports, such as hockey, water polo, dance and riding.
There is a wide range of extra-curricular clubs on offer at Mayfield, ranging from fencing and zumba, to badminton and personal training, ballet and life-guarding. All girls, whether they are seasoned veterans or beginners, are welcome to participate. Girls also have the opportunity to compete in inter-house and inter-form matches at school.
The extensive tennis programme at Mayfield includes all year round private coaching from South Coast Tennis Academy (SCTA), a selected Futures Squad, and summer tennis teams. We have also enjoyed five successful tennis tours to the world famous Nick Bollettieri Academy in Florida and Club La Santa.
