We equip our students with the skills needed to explore the exciting, creative colourful world of Textiles!
As an extra-curricular subject, we encourage the girls to set their own challenges, gaining confidence in their ability along the way. In this way they learn that making mistakes is part of the journey. They learn that the more they put into a project the more likely they will be to succeed. They learn to take responsibility for their own work, while working with their peers to build partnerships and success. They learn to enjoy being creative and to be proud of their achievements, valuable lessons which are equally applicable in the classroom, on the sports field, and in all areas of life.
The Textiles Studio is spacious and very well-equipped, with large work and cutting tables, twelve sewing machine work stations, as well as overlockers and embellishers. The Studio resembles a well-organised Aladdin’s cave of fabric, where tailors’ dummies modelling the girls’ work stand against shelves stuffed with threads, fabrics and paints, all neatly arranged by colour. The red room is a quiet design space. The girls are encouraged to spend time here thinking, planning, researching and drawing design ideas.
The Studio acts as a retreat for the girls, and they enjoy spending time working on their creations here during lunch times, after school and on Saturday mornings. Workshops are arranged during the school holidays.
While most of the girls who enjoy Textiles at Mayfield do so recreationally, we offer the Cambridge Pre-U Textiles qualification for Sixth Form girls.
