Year 7 Trip to the Sussex Coast
Despite bitterly cold gale force westerly winds tearing across the English Channel on Tuesday, our Year 7 Geographers had an interesting and worthwhile day on the Sussex coast collecting data for a number of hypothesis tests relating to marine processes of erosion, transport and deposition.
At the end of the day when the hard work had been done, the café at Holywell did a brisk trade in ice creams (really!) – the teachers settling for a cup of hot tea.

Year 7 and 8 'People like Me'
On Thursday 6th May, Year 7 and 8 pupils enjoyed a STEM careers event called 'People like Me' at School.
'People like Me' is run by WISE, the campaign for gender balance in Science, Technology and Engineering, in collaboration with the GSA (Girls School Association). The event aims to allow girls to recognise that careers relating to Science are not necessarily the traditional roles they might imagine, such as a Scientist, but encompass a huge range of careers, such as managing a science business, designing scientific products, and influencing government policy, as well as roles which use the logical skills that are learnt from studying Science. The event encourages girls to keep an open mind when considering their choices at A Level and beyond, as a career in Science may be for 'People like them'.
The girls had previously completed a questionnaire listing the adjectives which best describe them. From this, they were able to identify the type of person they are from a list of 12, and rank them in order. The options ranged from an explorer (inquisitive and practical), to a manager (highly organised and a good motivator).
Four Old Cornelians from six of the categories came to speak to small groups of girls. We were also privileged to hear our own Director of Development, Cora Saint, speak about her career journey. Cora's niece, who is an environmental health and safety manager for Lidl, also kindly spoke to the girls. Speakers came from a range of industries including engineering, account management, science writing and pharmacy, and each girl was able to visit their top three choices.
The afternoon was a really positive experience for the girls, who recognised how Science is important in a wide range of careers that they may not have thought required scientific skills. It was also inspiring and motivating for pupils in Lower School to see how successful girls who have attended Mayfield in the past are.
A huge thank you to all of the staff and Old Cornelians involved for providing such an interesting and informative evening.
Mrs Jocelyn Mahon, Head of Science
Year 8 Geographers Collect Data on Ashdown Forest
Year 8 Geographers enjoyed a blustery day out on Ashdown Forest on Wednesday, learning a wide range of new primary data collection techniques. It was great to be outside again doing fieldwork and putting the theory they had learnt in lessons into practice.
The girls undertook footpath trampling and species biodiversity surveys, and listened to a talk from a forest ranger about how wildfire affects the forest.
Mrs Victoria Williams, Teacher of Geography
Year 8 Tenner Challenge
A group of Year 8s are holding a sweet sale for the Year 8 Tenner Challenge on Monday 10th, Wednesday 12th and Friday 14th May. The Tenner Challenge is a free nationwide Young Enterprise challenge for young people aged 11 to 19, with the budding entrepreneurs being given £10 to get their business idea off the ground and make as much impact as possible.
If you would like to support their venture, please remember to bring your purse to School as they will be charging £1.50 for one bag of sweets and £2.50 for two bags!

PE Department Update
News from the Crease
Last week we were delighted to host our first fixtures since March 2019. The PE Department has really missed giving the girls the chance to play competitive sport and to put their hard-earned training and practice to the test.
The U13 and U12 teams both played Brighton College on Wednesday 28th April. This was the first time the majority of our Lower School cohort had played competitive Cricket and I am delighted to announce that all four Mayfield teams were victorious. The bowling in particular was great to watch.
This was followed by the opening game of the first stage of the U15 Sussex Cricket Hard Ball Cup against current cup holders, Hurst, on Thursday, and although Mayfield was beaten by an incredibly strong and well-drilled Hurst team, there were moments of note from the newly-formed squad. Year 8 Jess got her first hardball wicket for Mayfield, and Year 10 Lizzie found the boundary on more than one occasion off some very fast and impressive bowling.
Good luck to all those involved in upcoming matches – please make sure you are regularly checking SOCS so you are aware of when and where you are playing.
Sport Saturdays
Miss Nixon and Mrs Fletcher loved being back out on the pitch for early morning Hockey with the senior squad last Saturday. The girls blew away the cobwebs with some core skills and short corner finesse. They are looking forward to the upcoming fixture against Lingfield on 10th May. There will be another early morning session this Saturday in preparation for this.
Miss Starr took Years 7 and 8 for a Cricket Workshop which focussed on technique and throwing accuracy. It was great to see the girls improving throughout the morning as they progressed from simple pair work, to a continuous drill where they had to aim and throw at different targets. Well done to everyone who took part!
The U14 and U15 teams played a friendly Cricket fixture against each other. This was a great opportunity for the girls to play competitively once again and to hone their skills in preparation for this week's matches.
And finally, the boarders enjoyed another Saturday afternoon of Waterpolo, Tennis and Badminton. This weekend, Leeds House are off to Bowles Outdoor Centre and St Gabriel's have the option of playing Rounders or Bocce. I am sure it will be another fun-filled Saturday!

Weekend fun for Mayfield Boarders
Trip to Batemans
A group of Year 12 and 13 boarders spent Bank Holiday Monday visiting Rudyard Kipling’s home at Bateman's. They very much enjoyed touring the gardens of the 17th century house where Kipling spent time with his family, and crossing the fields to visit the memorial to Kipling’s son, John, in Burwash. The estate was Kipling’s retreat from public life, which was felt by the girls when they could not get a mobile signal!
Mrs Jana Carpinato, Teacher of Mathematics and St Dunstan's Boarding Assistant
Go Laser London
On Bank Holiday Monday, Gabs and Leeds boarders headed off to Go Laser London to try their hand at laser tag. We had two teams of 13 and, after two highly competitive games, the white armbands were declared the winners. The girls warmed up and refuelled with pizza afterwards before heading back to Mayfield.
Mrs Pippa Whitby, St Gabriel’s Housemistress and Teacher of PE
Cosy Night In for Micks’ Girls
On Saturday night, the St Michael's girls enjoyed a relaxed movie night with pizza and snacks. A great opportunity for the girls to take a break from the stress of exam revision!
