E-weekly Issue 174

Message from Mrs Green

The girls have chosen Young Minds as the School’s charity for this academic year.  They feel that following two lockdowns, young people need to look after their own mental health and that of their peers more than ever. They are aware that mental health provision in this country is under pressure and wanted to ensure that the Mayfield community is helping to make a difference in its own small way.

Emily, our Mental Health and Wellbeing Prefect, has launched a number of initiatives this term including ‘The Snug’ - a room where girls from any year group can go to talk to a Sixth Form student about any issues they may be having, or just have a quiet place to sit. Emily has also created a display board which features wellbeing tips for the girls, and information on who they can talk to (both in School and outside charities) about any problems they may have.  She will be organising a charity day later in the term where the girls can come to School dressed in yellow to raise awareness of World Mental Health Day.

I would also like to remind you about two workshops for parents next week. ‘Independent Learning: How to Turn Your Child into an Independent Learner’ takes place on Tuesday 12th October at 18:00 and is organised by Elevate – please click here if you would like to attend. The second workshop – ‘Everyone's Invited & How to Promote Change’ - is organised by the GSA and will take place on Thursday 14th October at 18:00 – please click here to register.

Mrs Niamh Green, Acting Headmistress

Caedmon Presents ‘Blue Stockings’ by Jessica Swale

1896 Girton College, Cambridge, the first college in Britain to admit women. The Girton girls study ferociously and match their male peers. Yet, when the men graduate, the women leave with nothing but the stigma of being a 'blue stocking' - an "unnatural, educated woman".

Jessica Swale's debut play follows Tess Moffat and her fellow first years in their determination to win the right to graduate.

If you would like to reserve your tickets to watch Caedmon perform ‘Blue Stockings’ on Thursday 18th or Friday 19th November in Mayfield’s Concert Hall, please click here.

Thank you.

Boarders’ trip to British Wildlife Centre

Mrs Morris took the Leeds House boarders for a lovely afternoon at the British Wildlife Centre in Lingfield last Saturday. The rain was absolutely torrential but it did have the added bonus of meaning they had the Centre to themselves!

Leeds House Urban Jumpers

The Leeds House boarders had a great time bouncing around at Urban Jump in Heathfield on Sunday.

PE Department Update

This week we have had a large number of hockey matches across the School.

Last Thursday, the U15s hosted Burgess Hill in a closely fought match: they were leading 1 - 0 for a large portion of the game however, late in the day, the opposition secured an equaliser and the match ended in a draw.

Saturday saw six teams in action against Ardingly in very wet and windy conditions.  The 1XI had a challenging match against a well organised side who battled fiercely. Unfortunately this was also the experience of the U15As and U14As who both lost their games. The U15Bs and U14Bs both drew 0 – 0.

All the girls showed great resilience and determination, and played with fantastic spirit. A special mention must go to all the girls who played Goalkeeper as the conditions were particularly difficult and they all made crucial saves throughout the day.

The highlight of the day was the 2nd XI securing a win with a great finish from Jemima.

Rosie S and Ines E began their captaincies with great confidence, determination and leadership. Well done all!
