Year 7 Team Building Trip to Bowles Outdoor Centre

Year 7 spent last Saturday afternoon together enjoying the beautiful weather at Bowles Outdoor Centre. They took part in team-building activities in the woods, which really brought them together as a year group. They worked well as a team, and listened to each other in order to solve the many puzzles and challenges they were presented with.

Isabel said: "I liked it when we created the bridge and the activity where we had to move the pretend bomb."
Holly added: "I really enjoyed the team building because, even though we didn't win, we all had really good fun!"

Hadlow Down - Hotter than Hawaii!

Year 11 Geographers were prevented by lockdown from travelling overseas for their Geography fieldwork. Nevertheless, they undertook a study of the River Uck at Hadlow Down in near tropical conditions on Tuesday. They tested the Bradshaw Model that examines how the characteristics of a river change from source to mouth.

Mayfield Honey

Following on from last week’s taster (excuse the pun), we are pleased to announce that Mr Rees-Moorlah has just put the very first batch of honey from the Mayfield bees into jars, and MESSy (Mayfield Environmental and Sustainability Society), would like to invite sealed bids to buy the first jar!

Please send your bid and contact details to the School Office in a sealed envelope marked 'Mayfield Honey', by Friday 25th September. The highest bidder will receive the first jar, and the money raised will be used to support the bees.

As a matter of interest, we understand that Prince Charles charges £25 a jar for his honey, and we doubt if Royal bees are any better than Mayfield bees!

Mr Steve Gough, Head of Geography

Christmas Ted Competition – it’s back

If you would like to enter the Christmas Ted Competition 2020, entry forms are now available in Lower School and the School Shop, or please email sbowles@mayfieldgirls.org to be sent one.

Entrants should either describe or draw their idea for a Christmas design for the School Teddy. This must be a Christmas or winter-themed scene, featuring Mayfield Ted, which can be re-created in the School Shop. The winning designer will receive a £10.00 voucher of their choice (e.g Top Shop, Lush, Amazon; i-tunes etc), and a box of chocolates.

Ted Tips:
-          Keep it relatively simple as we have limited space.
-          If you are in need of ideas, pop into the School Shop to see where Mayfield Ted is currently displayed, and see the pictures below which feature previous winning designs.
-          We will provide props and create the display for you. You just need to come up with the design.
Please return your entry form to the School Shop by Half Term (Friday 23rd October at 15:30), or email your design to sbowles@mayfieldgirls.org

Thank you.

Mrs Susan Bowles, School Shop Manager

News from the Chaplaincy

This week’s Gospel: Matthew 20:1-16

Gospel Reflection:
A difficult Gospel this weekend! I’ve always felt for the labourers who worked all day in the vineyard, and watched the later workers be given the same wage. Exhausted and hungry, they were bound to feel a thrill as the later workers were handed a day’s wage. Surely, having worked many hours more than the newcomers, they would get more money? Hadn’t they earned it? Imagine their disappointment as they were given the same wage. Despite it being what they were promised at the start of the day, shouldn’t they receive more? Or shouldn’t the others at least receive less?

Perhaps I identify with the day-long workers because I don’t consider myself as in need of God’s mercy as some other people I could name. Perhaps I feel like I’ve served my time going to Mass all these years, and trying to be a good person, that I deserve a better place in Heaven than many others.

The landowner asks: “Are you envious because I am generous?” But compassion and mercy are gifts never to be counted or measured. God’s love is the only wealth we should truly value. The latecomers needed that wealth just as much as the ones who worked all day - who are we to deny them this, or to envy the ease with which God offers us his love. Instead, let us try to emulate that endless compassion, to take joy in other people’s small victories, to not treat life as competition, but as a journey we all take together…

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

Please keep in your prayers the 2020-21 Confirmation candidates, who began their catechesis together on Wednesday.

Thank you.
Mr Ronan Lavery, Lay Chaplain
