E-weekly Issue 177

Message from Mrs Green

Welcome back to the second half of term. I hope you all had a restful and fun break with your families and friends.

This week has been a busy one at School and the girls have enjoyed taking part in ‘Maths Week’ activities and hockey fixtures, and our intrepid Duke of Edinburgh explorers have returned from their Gold Practice Expedition in Wales.

Looking ahead, we will be exhibiting at the International Schools Show in Battersea this weekend, and our Mental Health Ambassadors are organising a fun filled ‘HelloYellow Day’ on Tuesday to raise money for Young Minds. Please remind the girls to bring in £1 if they would like to wear yellow to School. The Year 9s will also be having their Cross Curricular Day on Wednesday!

Mrs Niamh Green, Acting Headmistress

Mrs Rachel Davies, Deputy Head of Sixth Form, Teacher of Biology and STEM Co-ordinator

Gold Duke of Edinburgh Practice Expedition

Over Half Term, 13 Year 12 and 13 girls journeyed to the Black Mountains in South Wales for their Gold DofE Training and Practice Expedition. After an early start in Mayfield, they arrived in Felindre to meet their expedition leaders who would be training and supporting them over the next five days.

Forming two groups, there then followed a lot of walking, a lot of camping, a lot of weather, and a lot of learning. Mia commented: “Despite some unwanted rain and wind, our group enjoyed the practice expedition greatly, particularly the picturesque scenery of the Welsh countryside. We are looking forward to completing the assessed expedition in the Peak District next year.”

Thank you to Mia and Maddie for supplying theses photos, and also to Dave Spencer and Paul Tracey for transporting the girls to and from their expedition.

Mrs Amanda Glubb, Head of Careers and Duke of Edinburgh's Award Manager

Lower School Charity Day

Lower School Charity Day fell on Friday 22nd October. Year 8 girls hosted a bake sale with delicious homemade treats, while the Year 7 girls all ventured out on the Mayfield Circular Walk.

Between the two year groups, the girls raised a grand total of £906.71 for Children in Need! Well done to them and many thanks to all the friends and relatives who donated to this worthwhile cause.

Mr Daniel Smith, Deputy Head of Lower School

This week has been ‘Maths Week’ and every day in their Maths lessons the girls have been learning about a different career that uses Maths. They have also been challenged to complete a daily logic puzzle and to share their favourite Maths jokes. Year 13 Maths Ambassadors Victoria D and Victoria B have also been showing the girls how to solve a rubik’s cube in under two minutes using algorithms!

News from the Chaplaincy

As the liturgical year comes to an end, we traditionally spend the month of November praying for the Faithful Departed. November is a time for remembering and praying for our loved ones who have gone before us, and whose loss we feel. It is a time when we are particularly conscious of those in our community who are grieving, and all those families who have lost loved ones in the past year.

A Book of Remembrance will be placed in Becket (Reception). Please feel free to write in that book the names of loved ones you would like to be remembered and prayed for in a special way this November. If you feel more comfortable, you can email me a list of names of people you would like to be included in the list.

All names will be added at regular intervals to a permanent Remembrance Book, which can be viewed in the Chapel from this afternoon.

Masses said in School during November will be offered for the repose of the souls of all those whose names are written in our Remembrance Book, as will the Rosary which is prayed each Monday A1, and each Thursday A2, in the Chapel.

A Prayer of Remembrance

God, thank you for the special people in our lives whom we are remembering in a special way during the month of November.

We thank you for being a compassionate God who walks with us in our dark moments of grief and loneliness.

We are thankful for all who continue to love and support us through our grief.

Lord, continue to be a light for us, giving us hope, direction and courage.

May we now live our lives treasuring the memories of those special people we have known and loved and help us to bring light and hope to others.

We make this prayer through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Mr Ronan Lavery, Lay Chaplain

Physics Talks

We have been continuing with our Thursday Coffee Mornings in Physics. The last two talks were given by Year 12s Charlotte and Elizabeth. Charlotte spoke about the possible origins of Dark Matter and the expansion of the universe, as well as recent discoveries in the field. Elizabeth spoke about the appearance of fractals in a plethora of subjects from Cellular Biology to the Structure of the Cosmos, as well as their appearance in works of Art.

Dr Darragh Corvan, Head of Physics

Equestrian Update

Last weekend was a busy one for the Mayfield Equestrian Squad! On Saturday, they competed in the School's County Show Jumping Qualifier with Evie, Daisy, Tatum and Ella winning the East Sussex County 1m Team, Tatum winning the 1m Individual, and Ella winning the 1.10.

On Sunday, they competed in the Eventers Challenge Qualifier and the Grass Roots Qualifier. Tatum, Emma and Evie won the Open Eventers Team Challenge, and Matilda, Chloe, Tatum and Emma came third in the Intermediate Class. You can find all the results here.

In addition to this, Year 7s Mimi, Charlotte, Emelia and Sophia qualified for the Grass Roots Regional Finals in December. Emelia has also qualified for the Eventers Challenge Championships at Hickstead and the 1m SJ team, and Tatum and Ella have qualified for the National Inter-County Finals in 2022.

Well done all!

During Half Term, the Squad had a very successful weekend competing in the NSEA National Schools Championships at Keysoe. Annabel, Evie, Fran and Ella are National 110 Team Champions; Issy, Eloise, Alice and Fran are National Dressage Team Champions; and Ella won the 1.20 Individual Show Jumping as well. PE Department Update

Inter-House Hockey
Five tournaments later and the final results are in for Inter-House Hockey! A big congratulations to Glennie who came in first place with 65 points, followed by Astor with 41 points, Bronte with 34 and, last but not least, Curie with 20.

Lower School competed in their Inter-House Hockey in the last week before Half Term. We were blessed with fantastic weather, and it was pleasing to see so many pupils take part with each House fielding both an A and B team. A special mention must go to our Goalkeepers, some of whom hadn’t been in goal before! Well done to everyone who took part.

We are looking forward to the last few weeks of the Hockey term, with more fixtures against Roedean this week. Good luck everyone!

Swimming Success for Mayfield
Over Half Term the results from the second gala of the Swimming Relay Championships came through. The Juniors did exceptionally well, coming 5th in the Medley Relay and 6th in the Freestyle Relay. These are great results for such a new team playing some stiff competition.

Our first full gala is on 22nd November at home against Burgess Hill where we hope the team will continue to go from strength to strength. For full results of the Relays please click here.

GB Selection for Lucia
We are pleased to announce that Year 10 Lucia has been selected to represent Great Britain in Fencing. Her GB ranking currently sits at 15th but with her recent 3rd place (Bronze), it is looking likely that she will be catapulted into the top 10. Well done Lucia!

Another Netball League Win!
Mayfield is going from strength to strength in the Tonbridge Netball League, with another convincing win beating Hearts Blue 40-13. Maria shined in defence, whilst Grace and Alice put on an excellent shooting display. A mention must also go to Rachel who had a brilliant debut game. Well done all, we look forward to hearing how you get on in the coming weeks.

OC News

Many congratulations to former teacher Tríona Doherty who has just had her first book published. Written in conjunction with Jane Mellett, ‘The Deep End - A Journey with the Sunday Gospels in the Year of Luke’ invites readers to come on a journey, through the story of Luke’s Gospel, to follow Jesus in the short years of his ministry. Through a series of reflections on the Sunday Gospels of Year C, it shares the Gospel’s focus on cultivating inclusiveness, compassion and a love that can turn the world upside down. In our world, threatened by ecological break-down, inequality and division, the message of Jesus as presented by Luke has much to say to us.

Tríona, a journalist, writer and editor who works with asylum seekers, refugees, and vulnerable women and children, is delighted with the endorsement the book has received from James Martin SJ (editor of America magazine) who said"Inviting, accessible and inspiring, this new book is a wonderful invitation to enter into the Gospel of Luke, with two experienced and lively guides. Highly recommended" - James Martin, SJ, author of Learning to Pray.”

Jewellery and valuable items (such as chargers and glasses) are photographed and emailed for all students to look at. Please check your emails and come to the School Shop to collect anything you think is yours asap.

Un-named items such as home coats and shoes are left on the top of the small cupboard opposite the School Shop in the hope that their owners will find them. They are left there for half a term before being donated to charity if they are un-claimed.
